From 90s Charm to Modern Elegance: Our Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen Renovation: Blending Modern Elegance with Southern Charm

Renovating our 1994 Southern Living home has been a journey of blending modern elegance with classic Southern charm, and this kitchen renovation was one of the most transformative updates we made. Last summer, we tackled the heart of the home—the kitchen—and I’m excited to share all the details of how we turned our dated 1990s kitchen into a fresh, timeless space.

The Vision

We knew we wanted a light and airy kitchen that felt fresh but still paid homage to the home’s Southern roots. The color palette played a big role in this transformation. We chose Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore for the cabinets—a soft, gray-blue that’s soothing and classic. It paired perfectly with the countertops, which are Bianca Rhino marble.

We opted for a slab backsplash to create a seamless look, and the elegant details were designed by Caylee Stefanek of Logos Interiors, who truly brought the space to life.

The Transformation

It’s amazing to look back at how the space used to be and see just how dramatic the transformation is. It feels like a completely different room! I’m so much happier now living in a home that reflects my style—it feels clean, spacious, airy, and modern.

Before

After

Custom Cabinetry & Storage

The cabinetry was one of the most exciting parts of the project. We gutted the old kitchen and had all new custom cabinets built. One of my favorite features is the island’s waterfall edge with picture-frame detailing, adding a touch of refined craftsmanship.

The cabinets extend all the way up to the ceiling for maximized storage, and the island is full of functional drawers, keeping everything organized. We worked with The Refinery for our cabinetry, and they did an incredible job!

Caylee’s idea to remove the upper cabinets around the sink was a game-changer. It instantly opened up the space, making it feel much more airy. With all the extra storage we gained elsewhere, we didn’t miss those cabinets one bit.

Finishes & Hardware

For the hardware, we went with unlacquered brass finishes, which patina over time and give an antique, lived-in look that I absolutely love. Caylee’s thoughtful hardware selections really elevated the design. She suggested furniture-style drawer pulls on the drawers on either side of the range, along with backplates for the knobs.

Because the cabinet design itself is simple and modern, the knobs and pulls add a feminine, decorative touch that softens the space beautifully.

Lighting Details

The lighting from Mayer Lighting Showroom really pulls everything together, casting a warm glow that completes the look. We replaced the ceiling fan with recessed lighting and chose a single pendant over the sink, keeping the space above the island open and uncluttered.

We didn’t need extra lighting over the island, and that choice helped maintain a clean, airy feel. A modern chandelier over the breakfast table adds a stylish finishing touch.

Feminine Touches

One of the standout features in the kitchen is the custom range hood, designed by Caylee. It’s a perfect balance of feminine and modern, and the soft curves add a unique elegance to the space. The Roman shade above the sink, in Sister Parish fabric, adds a touch of pattern and softness to the clean lines of the kitchen.

Subtle Details That Make a Difference

Another favorite detail Caylee designed is the pedestal footed toe-kick on the cabinetry. It’s such a refined, custom touch that elevates the entire kitchen.

The classic geometric inlay in the glass cabinet doors is one of my absolute favorite details. It adds character while still keeping the overall look streamlined and timeless.

We went with a white fireclay under-mount sink for a seamless countertop look and refinished the original floors for a cohesive finish. I’m really happy we decided against a farmhouse sink—it feels more modern this way.

One of the most beautiful details is the scalloped edging Caylee designed for the slab backsplash around the sink. It’s subtle, but so special.

The walls are painted Benjamin Moore OC-25, providing a crisp, neutral backdrop, and the floors are stained a rich Dark Walnut.

Hidden Appliances

Another brilliant suggestion from Caylee was to panel all the appliances except for the range. This creates a seamless, streamlined look that allows the blue cabinetry to truly shine.

With everything tucked away, the kitchen feels calm, tidy, and incredibly cohesive.

One Year Later

We couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. From the thoughtful design details to the functionality of the space, this kitchen has once again become the heart of our home.

If you’re planning a renovation, I can’t recommend Caylee Stefanek of Logos Interiors enough—she helped turn our vision into a reality we love living in every day.
