When we moved into our 1990s home, this living room makeover quickly became one of our top priorities—it was a space with so much potential, but it desperately needed a refresh. Picture this: yellow walls, amber-gold hardwood floors, and a bulky, outdated stack stone fireplace. It felt like a time capsule from the ’90s!

My goal was to transform this room into a warm, inviting space where we could host friends, hold Bible studies, relax together, and make family memories. I wanted it to feel timeless, welcoming, and functional for everyday life—not just pretty to look at.

The Transformation Begins

First on the list was tackling those golden hardwoods. We refinished the floors, opting for a rich Dark Walnut stain that gave the room an instant dose of historic sophistication and depth. That single change alone made the space feel more grounded and intentional.

Next, I chose Benjamin Moore Cloud Cover (OC-25) for the walls—a creamy white that softens the space and reflects light beautifully. This shade brings a fresh, clean look while still feeling cozy and warm, which was important for a room we use so often.

We had to get all of this done before moving in! We were on a tight three-week timeframe, and I don’t just mean the living room—the entire house had to be completed. All of the hardwoods were refinished, new carpet was installed, and every wall was painted before move-in day. It was intense, but absolutely worth it.

DIY Fireplace Makeover

The fireplace was originally covered in classic 1990s orange and brown stacked stone. I knew right away it needed a more modern, timeless touch, so I decided to take on a DIY fireplace makeover.

I covered the stone with a ready mix mortar using a mortar wash technique, which toned down the color to a soft, light gray. The result is a fireplace that still has texture and character but no longer overwhelms the room. It’s now a focal point that feels elegant, understated, and much more in line with the rest of the space.

Built-In Bookshelves: The Game Changer

One of the biggest changes in this room was adding built-in bookshelves. Before, the wall beside the fireplace felt awkwardly empty—a blank space just begging for purpose.

I designed the shelves to not only fill the wall, but to create balance and structure within the room. Now they house some of our favorite books, family photos, and meaningful decor pieces that tell our story. These built-ins truly transformed the space, making it feel finished, intentional, and incredibly inviting.

Finishing Touches

To complement the fresh look, we furnished the room with pieces that are both comfortable and stylish—nothing too precious, but everything practical for real life. A modern ceiling fan replaced the old fixture, instantly updating the space while keeping it functional.

Now, the living room has become exactly what I envisioned: a place that feels like home. It’s ready to welcome friends, host meaningful conversations, and serve as a cozy haven where our family can gather and slow down together.
