Living Room Makeover: Bringing a 1990s Space into a New Era
Before and After
When we moved into our 1990s home, the living room was one of the spaces that had so much potential but desperately needed a refresh. Picture this: yellow walls, amber-gold hardwood floors, and a bulky, outdated stack stone fireplace. It felt like a time capsule from the ’90s! My goal was to transform this room into a warm, inviting space where we could host friends, hold Bible studies, relax together, and make family memories.
The Transformation Begins
First on the list was tackling those golden hardwoods. We refinished the floors, opting for a rich Dark Walnut stain that gave the room an instant dose of historic sophistication. Next, I chose Benjamin Moore Cloud Cover (OC-25) for the walls, a creamy white that softens the space and reflects light beautifully. This shade brings a fresh, clean look but with a cozy, welcoming feel.
We had to get all of this done before moving in! We had a tight three-week timeframe, but we were able to get it all accomplished. Oh, and I don’t just mean the living room, but the entire house had to have refinished hardwoods, new carpet and paint!
DIY Fireplace Makeover
The fireplace was originally covered in that classic 90s orange and brown stack stone. I knew it needed a more modern touch, so I decided to take on a DIY project, covering the stone with a ready mix mortar, and using a mortar wash technique. This toned down the color to a beautiful light gray and gave the fireplace a soft, textured look that feels timeless and elegant. It’s now a focal point that grounds the room with character.
Built-In Bookshelves: The Game Changer
One of the biggest changes in this room was adding built-in bookshelves. Before, the wall beside the fireplace felt awkwardly empty—a blank space just begging for purpose. I designed the shelves to not only fill the wall but to create a sense of balance and structure in the room. Now, they house some of our favorite books, family photos, and pieces that add personality and charm. These shelves truly transformed the space, making it feel complete and inviting.
Finishing Touches
To complement the fresh look, we furnished the room with pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. A modern ceiling fan replaced the old fixture, adding a sleek touch that keeps the room feeling updated. Now, the living room has become exactly what I envisioned—a place that feels like home. It’s ready to welcome friends, host meaningful conversations, and be a cozy haven for our family to gather and create memories.
Final Thoughts
This room makeover has changed how we live in this space. It’s no longer just a living room; it’s the heart of our home, a place that radiates warmth and hospitality. Every time I walk in, I feel proud of the transformation and grateful for a space that truly feels like us.
