Toddler Bedroom Makeover: Creating a Sweet, Functional Space to Grow

If you’ve been following my Instagram for a while, you may have already seen my video reel and photos from my toddler’s bedroom makeover. This space was such a special project for me, and in this post I’m sharing all of the room details — along with more before-and-after photos from the transformation.

For this makeover, my goal was to create a room that feels calm and cozy, but still playful and age-appropriate — a space that could grow with my child instead of needing constant updates.

Before & After: A Fresh Foundation

Before we started decorating my son’s room, we began with a fresh, neutral foundation. We painted the walls, ceiling, and trim Benjamin Moore Cloud Cover White (OC-25) to create a soft, clean backdrop for the space. We also had the carpet professionally cleaned, and it came out stain-free and ready for him to move in.

Starting with a neutral base made it easy to layer in color, texture, and personality throughout the room.

Design Concept: A Room He Can Grow Into

My goal for my toddler’s room was to create a space that felt playful and imaginative, while still being one he could grow into over the years without needing constant changes. I wanted it to feel sweet and childlike now, but timeless enough to work as he gets older.

We already owned an antique full-size bed, and I knew it would be the perfect transitional bed as he learns to sleep outside of his crib. That piece became the starting point for the entire room design and helped anchor the space with character and history.

Bedding & Artwork: Sweet, Classic, and Boyish

I wanted my son’s bedding to feel sweet, but still boyish, and I found the perfect fit with this Caitlin Wilson Design sailboat bedding. The pattern has such a classic, playful feel, and it set the tone for the rest of the room.

To make the bedding feel even more personal, I painted the two sailboat paintings above the bed to coordinate with it. I don’t sell paintings, so I’ve linked several sailboat art and decor options throughout this post for anyone wanting to recreate a similar look.

Meaningful Details & Heirloom Pieces

When decorating my son’s room, I wanted the details to feel meaningful and simple. Whenever possible, I love incorporating family heirlooms — pieces that carry history and sentiment.

The wicker rocker in his room was actually mine as a baby. My mom still had it, so it absolutely had to go in the space. My son loves sitting in “his” chair and reading, and it’s easily one of my favorite details in the room.

I also displayed several silver keepsakes I received as baby gifts on his bookshelf, alongside an heirloom-style portrait I recently had done. These small touches add personality and make the room feel deeply personal.

The nightstand was originally a Facebook Marketplace find, but I later found a very similar rattan nightstand online so I could have a matching pair. I painted both using Yankee Blue chalk paint, which added just the right amount of color while still keeping the room calm and cohesive.

Window Treatments: Curtains That Work Hard

The curtains are from Ballard Designs, and I absolutely love the quality. They’re nice and weighty, which gives the room a finished look, and they’re light-blocking — a huge bonus that helps my toddler sleep longer.

They come in four different colors, and I paired them with curtain rods from Amazon, which honestly surprised me with how great the quality is. They were super easy to install, and they feel just as substantial as higher-end options. Ballard also carries similar rods, including double rods if you want to layer curtains.

Here are a few more photos of the details throughout the room. I’ve linked additional art, decor, and bed options at the end of this post if you’re looking to recreate a similar look or pull inspiration for your own child’s space.

Final Thoughts

This room makeover was such a sweet reminder that children’s spaces don’t have to be overly themed or constantly updated to feel special. By starting with a neutral foundation, choosing timeless pieces, and layering in meaningful details, this room feels both playful and lasting.

It’s a space my son can grow into — filled with pieces that tell a story and make everyday moments feel just a little more special.
